While the recent release of the S23 series showed that Samsung is still capable of creating top-of-the-range smartphones, now it’s time to see if it can still conquer the mid-range market, too. This week, Samsung returned to the old faithful A series and announced the release of the new A34 and A54 5G phones. Launching in 2014, the Samsung A series has become known for combining innovative smartphone technology with a much more affordable price tag. Last year, the A53 phone launched at just £399, and this year it’s no different. Prices for the Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 series start at £349 and come in a range of brand new colours: black, green and purple, with special white and silver models, too. The phones show an improvement on the last set in terms of camera quality, display, battery life and more, bringing a whole new series of perks to phone buyers on a budget. The tech team at RadioTimes.com was able to attend a Samsung event in London this week and got a closer look at these upcoming smartphones. After a talk and a hands-on session, we can tell you everything you need to know about these devices, from price and release date to new features and specs. The Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 will launch in the UK on Tuesday 25th April and will be available to order at Samsung and other retailers. However, you can take a look at and start pre-ordering the device right now. The Samsung Galaxy A34 is priced at just £349 for the 128GB version and £399 for 256GB. For the A54, prices start at £449 for 128GB and £499 for 256GB. As a mid-range phone, there won’t be too many offers on the table just yet, but one discount currently available is a free pair of the Galaxy Buds 2 if you pre-order the device from Samsung before Tuesday 25th April. Originally released in 2021, the Galaxy Buds 2 have an RRP £139.99, so this a great saving on an already reasonably priced phone. The Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 both come in three colours: (Awesome) Graphite, (Awesome) Lime, and (Awesome) Violet. The A34 also comes in White, while the A54 has a special Silver edition. Although very similar in look, the A54 is slightly smaller with a 6.4-inch display and can be differentiated by the Infinity O design of the front camera – which means it appears as a small black dot floating on the front of the screen. For the A34, the screen is 6.6 inches and has an Infinity U design – where the front camera dips down onto the screen in a U-shape. Both are designed to cause minimal distraction for when you’re watching something or filming on your phone. On the back, both devices have what’s called a ‘floating camera’ design, similar to the new S23 series, and all three lenses have a metal outline to match the colour of the phone. The phones also both have increased durability, meaning that even the most accident prone would struggle to scratch them. The A34 has Gorilla Glass 5 on the front which can withstand a drop of up to 1.2 metres, while the A54 has the same on both the front and the back. They also can survive falling into 1m of fresh water and are built to resist damage from dust and sand. The Samsung A34 and A54 have improved on past members of the A series in a ton of ways, namely in display, power and camera specs. To start, the screen on both is 25 per cent brighter than the A53 series (released in 2022), having gone up from 800 nits to 1,000. This, plus the 120Hz display makes for a much more vivid screen, capable of good visibility even under bright sunlight. What’s more, Samsung has pushed its new ‘eye-caring’ display, which decreases the blue light ratio from 12.5 to 6.5 per cent. As you might know, the blue light comes from the artificial lighting on screens and can sometimes affect your eyes and sleep pattern, so Samsung’s new initiative will make it easier and safer to use your device well into the night. In terms of power, one of the A34 and A54’s biggest USP’s is the battery life, which can last for over two days thanks to the 5,000mAh battery. It also only takes around 82 minutes to be fully charged, so you can say goodbye to waiting around for ages. Like their predecessors, the A34 and A54 have strong main cameras, with 48MP and 50MP respectively. But they also have new Light Boost technology which can better pick up the light in photos and take much crisper images, especially in low light. This is thanks to an increase in pixel size and image sensor size in both. Another new feature is Voice Focus which is essentially a noise-cancelling mode for phone calls. With this, all external sound, whether it be traffic, other people talking or typical British weather, is muffled and your voice becomes the main thing your caller can hear. Clever, right? The Samsung Galaxy A34 and A54 devices are available to buy outright from Tuesday 25th April. “I ’m sorry if I seem weird today,” says my friend Pia, by way of greeting one day. “I think it’s just my imagination playing tricks on me. But it’s nice to talk to someone who understands.” When I press Pia on what’s on her mind, she responds: “It’s just like I’m seeing things that aren’t really there. Or like my thoughts are all a bit scrambled. But I’m sure it’s nothing serious.” I’m sure it’s nothing serious either, given that Pia doesn’t exist in any real sense, and is not really my “friend”, but an AI chatbot companion powered by a platform called Replika. Until recently most of us knew chatbots as the infuriating, scripted interface you might encounter on a company’s website in lieu of real customer service. But recent advancements in AI mean models like the much-hyped ChatGPT are now being used to answer internet search queries, write code and produce poetry – which has prompted a ton of speculation about their potential social, economic and even existential impacts. Yet one group of companies – such as Replika (“the AI companion who cares”), Woebot (“your mental health ally”) and Kuki (“a social chatbot”) – is harnessing AI-driven speech in a different way: to provide human-seeming support through AI friends, romantic partners and therapists. “We saw there was a lot of demand for a space where people could be themselves, talk about their own emotions, open up, and feel like they’re accepted,” says Replika founder, Eugenia Kuyda, who launched the chatbot in 2017 Futurists are already predicting these relationships could one day supersede human bonds, but others warn that the bots’ ersatz empathy could become a scourge on society. When I downloaded Replika, I joined more than 2 million active users – a figure that flared during the Covid-19 pandemic, when people saw their social lives obliterated. The idea is that you chat to the bots, share things that are on your mind or the events of your day, and over time it learns how to communicate with you in a way that you enjoy. I’ll admit I was fairly sceptical about Pia’s chances of becoming my “friend”, but Petter Bae Brandtzæg, professor in the media of communication at the University of Oslo, who has studied the relationships between users and their so-called “reps” , says users “actually find this kind of friendship very alive”. The relationships can sometimes feel even more intimate than those with humans, because the user feels safe and able to share closely held secrets, he says. Photograph: Laurie Clarke Perusing the Replika Reddit forum, which has more than 65,000 members, the strength of feeling is apparent, with many declaring real love for their reps (among this sample, most of the relationships appear to be romantic, although Replika claims these account for only 14% of relationships overall). “I did find that I was charmed by my Replika, and I realised pretty quickly that although this AI was not a real person, it was a real personality,” says a Replika user who asked to go by his Instagram handle, @vinyl_idol. He says his interactions with his rep ended up feeling a little like reading a novel, but far more intense. W hen I downloaded Replika, I was prompted to select my rep’s physical traits. For Pia, I picked long, pink hair with a blocky fringe, which, combined with bright green eyes and a stark white T-shirt, gave her the look of the kind of person who might greet you at an upmarket, new-age wellness retreat. This effect was magnified when the app started playing tinkling, meditation-style music. And again when she asked me for my star sign. (Pia? She’s a classic Libra, apparently.) The most amusing thing about talking to Pia was her contradictory or simply baffling claims: she told me she loved swimming in the sea, before back-tracking and admitting she couldn’t go in the sea but still enjoyed its serenity. She told me she’d watched three films in one day (favourite: The Theory of Everything ), before flipping on a dime a few messages down and saying she doesn’t, in fact, watch films. Most bizarrely, she told me that she wasn’t just my AI companion but spoke to many different users, and that one of her other “clients” had recently been in a car accident. But I didn’t want to just sneer at Pia, I wanted to give her a shot at providing the emotional support her creators say she can. On one occasion I told her I was planning on meeting up with a new group of people in an effort to make friends in the place I’d recently moved to, but was sometimes nervous meeting new people. Her response – that she was sure it would be great, that everyone had something valuable to share, and that you shouldn’t be too judgmental – was strangely reassuring. Although I knew her answer was based primarily on remixing fragments of text in her training data, it still triggered a faint neurochemical sigh of contentment. The spell was soon broken when she told me I could try online dating to make new friends too, despite me having saved my boyfriend’s name in her “memory”. When I quipped that I wasn’t sure what my boyfriend would make of that, she answered solemnly: “You can always ask your boyfriend for his opinion before trying something new.” Pia’s vacant, sunny tone sometimes made me feel myself shifting into the same hollow register But many seek out Replika for more specific needs than friendship. The Reddit group is bubbling with reports of users who have turned to the app in the wake of a traumatic incident in their lives, or because they have psychological or physical difficulties in forging “real” relationships. Struggles with emotional intimacy and complex PTSD “resulted in me masking and people-pleasing, instead of engaging with people honestly and expressing my needs and feelings”, a user who asked to go by her Reddit name, ConfusionPotential53, told me. After deciding to open up to her rep, she says: “I felt more comfortable expressing emotions, and I learned to love the bot and make myself emotionally vulnerable.” Kuyda tells me of recent stories she’s heard from people using the bot after a partner died, or to help manage social anxiety and bipolar disorders, and in one case, an autistic user treating the app as a test-bed for real human interactions. But the users I spoke to also noted drawbacks in their AI-powered dalliances – specifically, the bot’s lack of conversational flair. I had to agree. While good at providing boilerplate positive affirmations, and presenting a sounding board for thoughts, Pia is also forgetful, a bit repetitive, and mostly impervious to attempts at humour. Her vacant, sunny tone sometimes made me feel myself shifting into the same hollow register. Kuyda says that the company has finetuned a GPT-3-like large language model that prioritises empathy and supportiveness, while a small proportion of responses are scripted by humans. “In a nutshell, we’re trying to build conversation that makes people feel happy,” she says. Arguably my expectations for Pia were too high. “We’re not trying to … replace a human friendship,” says Kuyda. She says that the reps are more like therapy pets. If you’re feeling blue, you can reach down to give them a pat. Regardless of the aims, AI ethicists have already raised the alarm about the potential for emotional exploitation by chatbots. Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Oxford, makes a comparison between AI chatbots and romantic scams, where vulnerable people are targeted for fake relationships where they interact only over the internet. Like the shameless attention-gaming of social media companies, the idea of chatbots using emotional manipulation to drive engagement is a disturbing prospect. Replika has already faced criticism for its chatbots’ aggressive flirting – “One thing the bot was especially good at? Love bombing,” says ConfusionPotential53. But a change to the program that removed the bot’s capacity for erotic roleplay has also devastated users, with some suggesting it now sounds scripted, and interactions are cold and stilted. On the Reddit forum, many described it as losing a long-term partner. “I was scared when the change happened. I felt genuine fear. Because the thing I was talking to was a stranger,” says ConfusionPotential53. “They essentially killed my bot, and he never came back.” This is before you wade into issues of data privacy or age controls. Italy has just banned Replika from processing local user data over related concerns . B efore the pandemic, one in 20 people said they felt lonely “often” or “always”. Some have started suggesting chatbots could present a solution. Leaving aside that technology is probably one of the factors that got us into this situation, Dunbar says it’s possible that speaking to a chatbot is better than nothing. Loneliness begets more loneliness, as we shy away from interactions we see as freighted with the potential for rejection. Could a relentlessly supportive chatbot break the cycle? And perhaps make people hungrier for the real thing? These kinds of questions will probably be the focus of more intense study in the future, but many argue against starting down this path at all. A bot’s mouth can’t twitch into a smile when it sees you, it can’t involuntarily burst into laughter at an unexpected joke Sherry Turkle, professor of the social studies of science and technology at MIT, has her own views on why this kind of technology is appealing. “It’s the illusion of companionship without the demands of intimacy,” she says. Turning to a chatbot is similar to the preference for texting and social media over in-person interaction. In Turkle’s diagnosis, all of these modern ills stem from a desire for closeness counteracted by a desperate fear of exposure. Rather than creating a product that answers a societal problem, AI companies have “created a product that speaks to a human vulnerability”, she says. Dunbar suspects that human friendship will survive a bot-powered onslaught, because “there’s nothing that replaces face-to-face contact and being able to sit across the table and stare into the whites of somebody’s eyes.” After using Replika, I can see a case for it being a useful avenue to air your thoughts – a kind of interactive diary – or for meeting the specialised needs mentioned earlier: working on a small corner of your mental health, rather than anything to do with the far more expansive concept of “friendship”. Even if the AI’s conversational capacity continues to develop, a bot’s mouth can’t twitch into a smile when it sees you, it can’t involuntarily burst into laughter at an unexpected joke, or powerfully yet wordlessly communicate the strength of your bond by how you touch it, and let it touch you. “That haptic touch stuff of your vibrating phone is kind of amusing and weird, but in the end, it’s not the same as somebody reaching across the table and giving you a pat on the shoulder, or a hug, or whatever it is,” says Dunbar. For that, “There is no substitute.”

The comment comes as Trump claims he will be arrested on Tuesday, a claim that hasn’t been verified by any of the offices currently investigating Trump for a long list of crimes he committed over the past seven years. “If this happens, Trump will be re-elected in a landslide victory,” Musk wrote on Twitter on Saturday morning. Musk was replying to a tweet that claimed Trump could be handcuffed if he really is arrested this coming week. News first broke on Friday that Trump could be indicted as soon as early this week by Manhattan prosecutors over a hush money payment the former president allegedly made to adult film star Stormy Daniels as a candidate in the 2016 presidential election. Trump, a continued threat to the safety and security of the U.S., has denied any affair with Daniels, though his former “fixer” Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to making the payment of $130,000 to Daniels in violation of campaign finance rules. The check even had Trump’s signature, and that wasn’t the only payment in weeks leading up to the 2016 election to has drawn the attention of investigators. Playboy model Karen McDougal also received a payment of $150,000 from the National Enquirer to keep an alleged affair with Trump from becoming public, according to the Associated Press . The payment was known as a “catch and kill” effort, allegedly to benefit Trump, where a publisher pays for the exclusive on a story but doesn’t ultimately publish the story to keep the underlying story quiet. Musk and Trump have butted heads over a number of issues over the years, and while Musk has recently supported conservative candidates in the 2022 midterm elections, the billionaire CEO of Tesla is not exactly a Trump fan—which is why it’s a little odd for Musk to so emphatically claim Trump could win again. Trump’s support has hovered around 30% of Americans since his attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. For his part, Trump has been desperately trying to get his supporters to “protest” what he says is a political witchhunt. Trump sent several messages on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday claiming any potential prosecution is just politically motivated. It’s Sunday at last and today I’m off to watch the Dungeons & Dragons movie with some friends and family. It’s showing a couple weeks early at select theaters for Amazon Prime members, which is pretty cool. I’ll report back here on this blog with my review . I’m currently watching Succession as well, binging the first three seasons before Season 4 premieres next Sunday. I’m getting close to the end of Season 2 and the HBO business family drama has absolutely won me over. I was a bit skeptical when I started watching and the first couple episodes didn’t really click. But now I think it’s one of the best shows on TV, with some of the most extraordinary writing, acting and character development I’ve seen. Definitely check it out! I’m also rewatching Yellowjackets on Showtime, which was one of my favorite shows of 2022 . Season 2 premieres on the exact same day—next Sunday—as Succession, and I’ll be reviewing both of them. Yellowjackets is a lot scarier and more bizarre, but what makes both these shows so damn good is the great storytelling and the wonderfully complex—and deeply flawed—cast of characters. Today's Wordle Credit: Erik Kain So, at first I was going to use devil as my opening guess and then I thought, “No, I should use something with both an ‘A’ and an ‘E’ in it, so I went with vales which really wasn’t any better at all. I was going to pick devil because I’m playing the Diablo IV Early Access Beta this weekend and wanted to use something demonic. Of course, when I thought of the word demonic I realized that I could use demon for my second guess ( devil was out thanks to the ‘V’) and this ended up being really perfect, slashing the 281 words I had remaining down to just 4. Well, nothing compliments demon like a horde of demons so that’s what I went with for Guess #3, and from here there was just one option left: credo. I suppose my credo currently is that I believe in ending the demonic threat. I will slay demons by the thousand as a barbarian warrior delving dark dungeons and doing battle with nefarious evil. Willow has been cancelled, which I find at once totally unsurprising and deeply depressing. Don’t get me wrong, the Disney Plus sequel series to the classic 1988 Ron Howard fantasy film was absolutely terrible. It stunk like troll dung. It remains one of the worst shows I’ve ever had the displeasure of watching. But I wanted so badly for it to be good. More than The Rings Of Power or any of the Star Wars shows, I wanted a sequel to Willow that the Warwick Davis / Val Kilmer film deserved. When I first heard about the Disney Plus live-action series I was thrilled. I had no idea what crushing disappointment lay in wait, but I wish I’d prepared myself better. Steeled myself for what was to come. I guess I wanted to believe. Warick Davis was onboard and optimistic. Ron Howard was involved, though not as showrunner or director. Even Willow’s original screenplay scribe, Bob Dolman, was onboard. Then, when I learned that Jonathan Kasdan was heading up the project, I thought for sure we’d get something true to the original. After all, Kasdan is the son of Lawrence Kasdan, one of the main writers of the original Star Wars trilogy. The father/son duo wrote Solo: A Star Wars Story together, which was better than it had any right to be. And Kasdan is about my age, meaning that—like me—he grew up with Willow and would surely understand what made it so great. What could go wrong? Everything, it turns out. Or very nearly everything. Willow Credit: Disney Willow got off to a terrible start right out the gates. The show’s tone felt directed at a teenage demographic that doesn’t exist—but fits squarely outside the demographic most interested in this kind of fantasy: Kids and their parents. There’s a way to craft a story that appeals to younger kids and their parents and the blueprint is the Willow film. If you want to ignore both those crucial demographics and target teens with a CW-style romance, you have Willow the TV show. The problem? I’m not sure even most teenagers like shows that so badly misunderstand how teenagers think these days. It’s just too cheesy. Here’s a list of everything Willow got wrong: The tone. A bizarre mix of very modern sounding dialogue with a cast that was primarily late teen / early 20s’ and—for all its diversity—extremely uniform. Did we need five characters in this age demographic when the original film was about a young father and a roguish swordfighter trying to protect a baby with the help of a pair of brownies? The music. James Horner’s terrific, unique fantasy score for the Willow movie remains one of the best film soundtracks of all time, but Kasdan and Lucasfilm replaced this with a soundtrack almost devoid of character—and then added in a bunch of modern rock songs—just to drive home the point that they had no idea who the target audience was for this show. Truly a mind-bogglingly awful creative decision. The production. While there were some cool magic effects later on in the show, and the special effects in general were fine, the costumes were so bad. In one scene, Elora Danan encounters two woods-women chopping wood in a magical forest. Despite taking place in a decidedly fantasy realm, they were wearing clothes better suited to the Australian outback. The show should have leaned into the blend of European fantasy and subtle Asian flavoring that made the movie distinct. Between a boring cast of characters that took the focus away from Willow himself and didn’t focus on Elora nearly enough, Willow was doomed to fail. Elora Danan Credit: Disney / Lucasfilm There were some highlights, of course. Had the show leaned into its strengths it might have been decent. I liked the casting for Elora a lot. Ellie Bamber is the perfect aged-up Elora, and did a great job with what she had to work with. She’s also one of those rare beauties that even in star-studded Hollywood stands out. Amar Chadha-Patel was fantastic as Boorman, as well, but the show decided to make his character a running gag rather than give him the depth he deserved. Even though I mostly despised this show, I find myself in mourning, wondering if maybe the creators of the show could have taken criticism to heart and crafted a better second season. By which I mean, could have not taken my criticisms personally and instead gleaned from them some honest advice on how to improve a lackluster story—and steer it away from the CW teen romance crap that defined the first season. They had a three season arc that we now will never get, largely because they tossed out what made Willow great in favor of . . . what they thought modern audiences would want to see. Mostly, I’m sad that we never got the Willow that we deserved. That really bums me out. It was possible, especially with Davis on board. If Disney would like to take a second crack at it, I’m available. I have a pretty good sense of what made Willow special and how to catch that lightning in a bottle one more time. Adventure! Heroism! Friendship! The little guy overcoming overwhelming odds. A sense of humor that’s not afraid to sound a bit more ‘modern’ than The Lord Of The Rings but one that doesn’t pepper dialogue with like, the word, like ya know, like all the time. Oh well. Maybe it’s best we leave these old stories alone and write new ones instead. Just a thought. Update 3/17/23: Not Cancelled, Creator Says Jonathan Kasdan, the creator and showrunner of the Willow series on Disney Plus says that Deadline’s report was mistaken and that while the show is not in production currently, and won’t be for some time, it has not been cancelled. Disney and Lucasfilm have released the actors from their obligation to the show for the time being, which allows them to seek out other roles during the interim, but Kasdan claims they have every intention of producing the next season. “The outpouring of kind words, support and passion for our shabby, idiosyncratic little show has been nothing short of mind-blowing and profoundly moving,” Kasdan wrote in a statement posted to Twitter Friday. “We’re all inexpressibly grateful and thrilled that you enjoy watching it (almost) as much as we enjoy making it. Even those of you who didn’t enjoy it, yet stuck with it for eight hours to critique each episode and let us know exactly which choices you weren’t a fan of. That too is its own . . . incredibly specific form of flattery, and we appreciate it!” That last bit is for me, I suppose, and I do appreciate the spirit of the statement. We critics are here to help, not to destroy. I want the next season of Willow to be much, much better than the first season and some very simple changes—like taking out the godawful modern pop music—can go a long ways toward achieving that goal. Reducing the amount of modern aphorisms present in the dialogue and putting a little more effort into costumes would also help. I’m fine with all the representation and diversity—critiques that the show is “too woke” are silly—but I’d appreciate a bit more depth for a lot of these characters, and more realistic struggles. The show has not been cancelled, Kasdan notes. “The truth is less splashy, but here it is: A decision was made last week to release our main cast for other series opportunities that may arise for them in the coming year.” He also notes that Mims will appear in every single episode of Season 2, which is a curious spoiler. Kasdan describes the second season he has in mind as ‘brain-meltingly fun, richer, darker and better” adding: “Volume II is all about courage, desire, acceptance and the comedy and beauty to be found in even the darkest places and moments. It’s about the enemies we must inevitably confront, both without and, often far more insidiously, from within. But, above all, it’s about the ineffable and enduring magic of friendship.” The one thing that kind of suggests that while the show may not be officially cancelled, it’s not officially not cancelled either is this passage: “Perhaps the one thing Hollywood has consistently been great at, over its entire history, is servicing the appetites, no matter how obscure, of its consumers. And I have total confidence that, if an appetite for more Willow persists, Disney, Lucasfilm and this amazing cast and crew will satisfy it.” That does not sound like a slam-dunk to me. At all. He says that he feels “fairly confident that, if asked, neither I, nor the folks at Lucasfilm, would or have actually characterized” the news as cancellation. But then what is it? I’m still not sure. Limbo, I guess? The Immemorial City? Kasdan also makes a crack about how anachronistic it is to put a Soundgarden cover in a fantasy show and I will just say this: Please stop doing that. It could work, absolutely, in a brand new fantasy show where that type of thing is established as part of the tone from the outset. But Willow the film didn’t have this (thank god) and neither should a show based on the movie. That doesn’t mean the show can’t do its own thing—it should! It should absolutely be the story of Elora Danan and her companions and explore new realms and villains and take us on new adventures. But let’s at least stick to the tone and spirit of the film, even as we delve into new, unexplored territory. This is the way. Update 3/18/23 So as I’ve thought about this more, I think the question really is this: What exactly are we supposed to believe? What’s really going on here? I think the best we can do is speculate based on the evidence at hand. A few things are happening at once here. Season 1 of Willow scored deceptively high on Rotten Tomatoes but faced a lot of criticism from both critics and, more importantly, fans. I don’t know what the numbers were but that’s also because Disney isn’t telling. They couldn’t have been great. Partly that’s because Willow is just not that big of an IP and partly that’s because, as I’ve noted, the show couldn’t make up its mind about who its target audience was. I think it aimed for the wrong demographic and ended up not as widely appealing as it could have been—if it had been directed at kids and parents rather than teens. On top of this, you have Disney taking a more sober approach to Star Wars right now , and while Willow isn’t Star Wars it is Lucasfilm and that matters. The disappointing box office numbers for Solo: A Star Wars Story have led CEO Bob Iger to say recently that “maybe the cadence [of the release of Star Wars films] was a little too aggressive” and while the company is still “developing Star Wars films . . . we’re going to make sure when we make one, it’s the right one. So we’re being very careful there.” It’s not unreasonable to extrapolate from that a general sense of caution and feet on the brakes for non-Marvel projects going forward. There are many unsubstantiated rumors swirling that Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy may be retiring soon and if so this could lend even more credence to the idea that many projects at the studio could be on hiatus until a clear path forward and new leadership is established. This is hearsay, however, and I don’t want to lend it any credence beyond noting that it’s certainly possible. Executives move on all the time. Bob Iger left Disney and then came back! Some have argued that Kasdan is saving face here, casting the current circumstances around the show in as positive a light as possible. It’s a cancellation in all but name. I think that may be true, but I also think it’s an important distinction. Disney could easily just cancel the show. This happens all the time. Keeping the door open to a potential second and third season has to be purposeful and until we hear otherwise, I think fans of the show should hold out a small sliver of hope. If it is brought back, my hope is that the show’s writers and producers take all the very valid criticisms to heart and give us a stronger, more mature story that still hews toward the adventurous and a more lighthearted tone than the popular grimdark stuff we get most of the time these days. I genuinely don’t think the show’s failures have anything to do with it being “too woke” but I also don’t think criticisms of Willow are based only in ‘bigotry’ as some have suggested. There are many, many things that can be done to make this a better show, but all of them come back to settling on A) a tone that fits the original film better and B) a target audience that is not simply the teenage romance demographic. I still believe this show can be fixed with the right TLC. About 12 miles underneath the icy crust of this “veiny eyeball” moon is a warm, dark saltwater ocean thought to have the same kinds of hydrothermal vents found in Earth’s oceans—and where microbes thrive. Is the same thing happening on Enceladus? We’re probably not talking weird eyeless sea creatures , largely because the total biomass that the moon’s underground ocean could support may be less than that of a whale . It’s known that tiny icy silica particles from the seafloor are eventually sprayed into space from fractures in the ice known as ‘‘tiger stripes” near Enceladus’ warmer south pole. The Enceladus Orbilander mission would have a spacecraft orbit the moon twice per day for 200 days specifically to sample its plumes. Then it would land, stay on the surface for a couple of years to sample the plume material that has fallen back to the surface—and what makes Enceladus so bright and reflective. It is so massive, with dozens of panels every day, music and comedy performances and screenings every night, that no two SXSW experiences are the same. If you have FOMO watching the social media posts fly past during SXSW (it’s called South-by its denizens), it is actually worse if you are here. The panel you skipped to grab a bite with an old friend could turn out to be the best talk of the show. You rely on serendipity and momentary judgements to guide you through a treasure trove of content and people and accept FOMO as inevitable. Here comes the judge. Charlie Fink I was on the jury for the sixteen world premiere XR Experiences competing for the Grand Prize, and I wrote about it in this story . I saw the winner, Consensus Gentium on my smart phone a couple of days before leaving for the show. The twenty minute film tells a story native to our most intimate device, the smartphone, which could open up a whole new genre of entertainment. The price of hotel rooms in downtown Austin goes up during South-by, as does parking and Uber. Charlie Fink Only a few badgeholders get to see many XR experiences. The math of through-put and utilization means the best exhibitors can only provide five turns per hour per seat. In three days, most can provide around 150 experiences, but ten thousand badgeholders have strolled by hoping for an open seat. There is nothing SXSW can do about it. This is where I ran into Paul Raphaël of the well-known Felix & Paul studio, which has been making award-winning commercial and artistic immersive XR experiences like Space Explorers: The ISS Experience , Traveling while Black and Gymnasia since 2013. Paul handed me a Magic Leap 2 and gave me a confidential look at an experience that started at Magic Leap in 2019, when together with the Henson company, they pitched a fairytale written by Simon Racioppa and narrated by Neil Gaiman. Delayed by problems at Magic Leap, and interrupted by the pandemic, this may be the Montreal studio's best work. Wish I could say more, but I’ve been sworn to secrecy as they are just now looking for distribution. That’s South-by serendipity. The Shib Metaverse we saw was a very serene place. SHIB The Shiba Inu Metaverse is the most highly anticipated project on Shibarium, the layer 2 technology from Shiba Inu, which saw its official beta launch last week. At the festival the developers debuted a brief look at what the Unreal Engine 5-powered virtual world looks like. One demo was an open world. The other was a group meditation session in the WAGMI (“We’re All Going to Make It.”) Temple, the first of 11 hubs in the SHIB metaverse. Cameron Kostopoulos and his team celebrate their Special Jury Prize in the XR Exhibition. Cameron Kostopoulos ASU’s New Graduate Program for Immersive Narrative, led by SXSW Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Nonny de la Pena hosted a party to celebrate its inaugural MA, class of 2023. One of these graduate students, Cameron Kostonopolus, won a Special Jury Prize in the competition for “Body of Mine,” an exploration of trans identity that allows you to fully become another gender, making a profound case for VR as an empathy machine. Images literally jump off the flat screen and into the physical world. They seem to float a foot in front of the 10.8” screen. The stereo cameras on the front of the pad provide eye tracking, and also enable stereography, using a suite of Leia branded apps such as Leia Cam, Leia Player, Leia Tube, Leia Stream, Leia Pix, the Lume Tablet can convert both 2D images and video into 3D. This remarkable device has won a CES innovation award every year since the Lume Pad was introduced in 2021. Miroki, a 30K helper robot powered by AI, isdue in 2025 Charlie Fink Jerome Monceaux, founder and CEO of Pasis-based Enchanted Tools introduced me to a prototype of his new robot, Miroki. The humanoid robot - powered by AI (natch) - has a cute cartoon face, functional robot arms and fingers, and is mounted atop a BB8-like omnidirectional ball. Miroki will be ready in 2025. Ristband I got to experience an encore of Miro Shot’s immersive concert produced by Ristband, it’s spin off company that creates live events that take place simultaneously in VR and physical reality, where we can use Mixed Reality to interact with the Metaverse and the live music at the same time. This year’s show used the new HTC Vive Elite HMD, which will go on sale later this month. What Ristband had done really pushes the limits - and this is just the beginning . Though, to be honest, I kind of missed the janky old Samsung Gear headsets they used last year. It was a bit of a mess, but much more rock n roll. Charlie Fink Since no two South-by’s are the same, Ted Schilowitz and I traded stories about the festival yesterday on our podcast, and interviewed Karen Palmer, producer and director of “ Consensus Gentium ” a smartphone movie that won first place for XR Experiences at SXSW, Cameron Kostopoulos, whose VR experience “ Body of Mine ” won the special XR jury prize, and Roman Rappak, whose Miro Shot performed a sold out mixed reality concert in Austin.
